Star Trek Voyager: Before and After

Episode written by:

ROUNDED UP:

This is a great Star Trek episode. The star of the episode is Kes, who is of course, an Ocampa. Her race live up to some nine or twelve years, and then die. You could be excused for thinking that this is what the episode is about. A great time-travel episode.

WHAT HAPPENED

Kes is really old (nine years is OLD for an Ocampa) but we don't see it - we are looking for her POV actually, being treated in Sickbay, a young Asian boy called Andrew, a young blond who is actually Kes' daughter (what do you mean, she doesn't have a daughter in the previous episodes. Wait), and the Doctor who is no longer bald (actually he has too much hair). Paris can be heard and they leave the Doctor to treat her ocampan aging symptoms ('moralogium') using a biotemporal chamber. She's his finest friend, he tells her. She does not speak.

Whiteness. We notice Kes is old. Andrew, the boy, approaches Kes giving her a present. He excuses himself saying he should have finished it before in time for her birthday. 'I do not know you' Kes says. Andrew calls the HoloDoc, called Dr Van Gogh. She doesn't remember Andew, but she recalls the Doctor telling her he's her finest friend. The Doctor doesn't remember this, but it is certainly true. She mentions the biotemporal chamber and the Doctor is puzzled, until this point they had only discussed it.

Captain Chakotay is told by Dr Van Gogh that Kes has less than 1% of her memory ingrams left, but with the biotemporal chamber, her life could be extended by another year. Chakotay recalls how she had operated on him just a few weeks ago. Kes feels cold and everything flashes suddenly out to white. She wakes up in her quarters, hears some voices talking about her birthday. She sees a photo of herself holding a baby. Her face, in the mirror, is old. She sees the blond woman again, and Andrew working on the present he will give her later (or gave her from Kes' POV).

It goes on this way, with Kes flashing backwards to earlier moments. A younger Kes (but still old), with Paris' arm on her, and Neelix in a Starfleet uniform brings her a chocalate cake for her ninth birthday. Commander Tuvok says that Neelix is a security officer. Kes mentions to the Doctor about the biochamber, surprising him as he had the idea only that morning. Paris and Chakotay scan for temporal distortions or anomalies while Kes looks up records of her life searching for clues. No anomalies were found, Paris tells Kes. Kes asks about when she was exposed to chronoton radiation. Paris says 'That was the begininning of the Year of Hell.' Paris recalls how the Voyager spent a year under constant attack from the Krenim. Many good people died, including captain Janeway, the Doctor was offline for six months, Janeway, Joe Carey, and Torres were killed. Paris has a very painful expression when he talks about Torres, he wanted to die when she did, but Kes helped him through that difficult moment. He gives her important information - a Krenim chronoton torpedo got stuck in the Voyager hull, it got through the shields because it's in a temporal flux. This makes them both think, they head to sickbay and there is another flash after Kes feels cold.

Kes holds the baby (Andrew), Kes asks the stardate to Paris and Lenis (her daughter) after Kim, Lenis' husband, takes the digital photo that Kes saw earlier. To be continued...

Conclusion: A very good episode.
